Who's the Big Boss here?

Published 22 Oct, 2010 10:23am

Veena Malik, Big Boss 4I was going through different newspaper websites and reading blogs, when a piece of writing appealed to me. My eyes caught a heading relating to Pakistani celebrities on the Indian reality show Big Boss Season 4. Before giving a second thought, I clicked on the link and started to read.

I had heard before about some Pakistanis appearing in Big Boss Season 4, but turned a deaf ear to the news and thought they were just rumors. But, later I found out that our Pakistani celebrities like Veena Malik and Ali Saleem, Aka Begum Nawazish Ali, have actually appeared in Big Boss Season 4. I thought of it as a great move. In fact I actually felt proud of them, they at least had the courage to go on the front and play with renowned faces of the Indian media industry.

But, when people conclude from all this understanding that Indians are so sweet and they welcome our people in their biggest shows, I raise my eyebrows. People brand India as a great nation who steps forward on the route of friendship and always initiate such steps. To be very honest, these views and comments frighten me that why do we act like fools? Its all about commercialism, Media commercialism.

The Indian media giants are promoting their businesses across borders, just for the sake of money. By including only Indian celebrities on the show, they can cater only for the Indian audience. The inclusion of our celebrities on their shows, they try to sweep the entire Pakistani audience towards Indian channels. It’s already getting difficult for our own media to retain the Pakistani audience on our own channels and now Big Boss and other such shows are causing more damage to our media industry.

Not only the media industry, but they are also destroying our nation, our cultural and moral values. Indians are making us fool and forcing us to think only on commercial basis, leaving aside our moral values. The shows, whether its Big Boss or Chotay Ustaad, might sweep Pakistani audience and sponsors to Indian channels.

As where I was reading some blogs relating to the topic, Indians were also commenting and I was shocked to read one of their comments about our celebrities. The comment read that Pakistani celebrities are being invited by India because their own country doesn't offer such opportunities, and they only become stars when Indian entertainment industry promotes them.

I admit it as a bitter, but true fact but that is how every Indian thinks about Pakistan. Being a country we show that we don’t have any self respect and I feel very sorry for my country's celebrities. Just because they don’t have opportunities, they fly to India for better monetary gains and fame without considering what Indians think about them and their country.

I was really saddened when I read another comment of another Indian on the site about our celebrities. It read, “They will keep one of them till the end but they won’t declare them winner even if they win.” That’s what I thought about a lot, but had nothing to say on a defensive note.

Is it really worth it to go to the Indian industry, when we know they don't welcome us and have biased opinions all around.
