Ever wonder, why the circular camera lens give rectangular images?

Web Desk: Lens is round and does produce a round image, but then the image produced gets cropped on the rectangular sensor shape.

The lens size is larger than the sensor and the sensor is taken to be like a rectangle whose all four points lie on the circumference of the circle.

This image illustrates that image circle is produced by the lens and the rectangle is captured by the sensor.

Therefore, no matter what type of lens you use, the image will get formed on the sensor, which is always rectangular in shape.
