ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Thursday indicted deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son in-law Captain rtd. Safdar in graft references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Aaj News reported.
The court indicted Sharif and family in London properties case despite of the fact that Nawaz Sharif and lead defence counsel Khawaja Haris Ahmed were both out of the country.
However, all three of the accused have denied the charges. The court has postponed the hearing till 26th October.
Earlier, Maryam and her spouse Capt Safdar separately arrived at the judicial complex amid tight security for the hearing of three corruption references. They were accompanied by senior PML-N leaders and ministers.
Sharif’s counsels filed an application seeking adjournment of indictment proceedings. The application cited that , the indictment hearing should be thwarted immediately as Volume 10 of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report has not been released by the apex court.
The NAB prosecution urged the court to indict the accused today.
After the submission of the plea, Judge Muhammad Bashir halted the proceedings for 15 minutes. Momentarily the court dismissed the plea by Sharif family to defer hearing of references till decision of the Supreme Court on their petition to club the references together.
Mark of respect
Talking to the media persons at the judicial complex in Islamabad, Maryam Nawaz said they are facing the courts as mark of respect for the law and constitution.
She said by appearing before the courts, they are proving that the family of the former prime minister is not above the law.
Responding to a question, Maryam Nawaz also rejected reports of rift within the family and the party. She said the entire party is united under the leadership of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
‘October the 13th’
In the last hearing the accountability court abruptly adjourned the indictment of deposed Prime Minister’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz and son in-law Capt retd. Safdar moments after the hearing into the graft case began. PML-N lawyers forced their way into the courtroom and surrounded judges bench protesting against the security forces. Lawyers claim that, they were manhandled by the security officials right out side the court.
On October 13 Counsel of the former PM Sharif, Khawaja Haris, before the court stated that his client should be exempted from personal appearance before the court as he is in London due to the mild illness of his spouse. Medical certificate of Kulsoom Nawaz was also presented before the court.
Ousted PM’s sons Hasan and Hussain Nawaz were declared ‘absconders’ in the same hearing, as they failed to appeared before the court.
Ousted PM Sharif and his sons have been nominated in all three references, while Maryam and her husband have been named only in a reference.
