Although National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has rejected reports that he has filed a reference against Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, the heated political climate has given birth to an unfortunate controversy. Commenting on reports in a section of the media regarding filing of a reference against Justice Khosa, National Assembly spokesman has said there is no truth in reports. According to him, the ‘media’ should refrain from speculation and false statements about the speaker.”
His denial came hours after media reports claimed that the Speaker National Assembly had filed a reference against the Supreme Court’s most senior judge Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, who was head of the apex court’s five-member bench that had delivered its ruling in Panama Papers case. The reference, according to social media reports, was filed under Article 209 of the constitution against Justice Khosa for delivering April 20 verdict in which he questioned Ayaz’s ruling in favour of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
As per the reference, the Speaker has purportedly objected to Justice Khosa’s remarks made in the April 20 judgment over the Panama case, stating that the remarks were biased. How ironic, however, it is that PTI chairman is trying to cash in on the opportunity by demanding National Assembly Speaker’s resignation for an act that he never committed. In a heated political situation, is it a must for a citizen to choose a side and display it?
