ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday approved the budget document for 2016-17 in a cabinet meeting. Sharif chaired the meeting from Pakistan’s High Commission in London through video link , Aaj news reported.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, through a video conference from Pakistan High Commission in London, presided over the cabinet meeting, held here at the PM’s Secretariat.
The budget papers were signed by the Prime Minister, which were sealed to be opened before the budget session on June 3, 2016 when Finance Minister Ishaq dar will present
The finance minister briefed the meeting about salient features of the budgetary proposals.
Nawaz Sharif is in London where he is due to undergo an open heart surgery on Tuesday.
The cabinet prayed for the successful procedure and early recovery of the Prime Minister.
Earlier, the Prime Minister also chaired the meeting of National Economic Council that gave approval to the budget allocations of various sectors.
According to reports, PM approved eight hundred and sixty billion on defence budget. Sharif said that, GDP growth rate during tenure of the PML-N Government remain above four percent and this year the country is set to achieve GDP growth rate of 4.71 percent which is highest in eight years.
PM also expressed the confidence that timely completion of projects would attract investment in different areas of the country.
He has given directions to Federal Finance Minister, Ishaq Dar for inclusion of a special package for development of agriculture in the next year’s budget. He added that, he has a vision to see Pakistan free of terrorism, backwardness and illiteracy.
The Federal Cabinet offered prayers for success of the operation of the Prime Minister. These were led by Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf.
National Economic Council meeting
Earlier, Prime Minster Nawaz chaired National Economic Council meeting, in which NEC approved Federal Public Sector Development Programme of about 800 billion rupees for the next financial year.
800 billion rupees of Federal PSDP, provinces would also be spending 875 billion rupees on development, taking total development plan to a record level of 1675 billion rupees for the next financial year.
The Federal development programme includes 655 billion rupees for development, 100 billion rupees for rehabilitation of IDPs, 120 billion rupees for Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and 25 billion rupees for gas infrastructure development.
