WEB DESK: Bollywood mega star Salman Khan has been appointed as the goodwill ambassador of Indian contingent to the Rio Olympics. His appointment was greeted with joy by some and criticism by others.
Salim Khan, Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty were among those who stood in support of the actor while sportsmen like Gautam Gambhir, Milkha Singh and others criticised this move by the Indian Olympic Association.
Those who revolted against the move are of the view that a sportsperson should have been made the brand ambassador rather than the actor.
Coming on the heels of this controversy were reports that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has started an online petition against the Khan’s appointment. On a closer inspection it was revealed that it was not ‘The Aishwarya Rai’, but just a simple girl.
We now bring some good news for the ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ fans. The actor has got support from an unlikely quarter.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman’s ex-flame, is of the view that the IOA is right in appointing Salman as the goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics, she was of an opinion that Khan is doing good for the nation.
Yes, the Bachchan bahu, who was at the launch of Cannes 2016, gave her view on her ex-boyfriend being appointed as the brand ambassador.
Aishwarya Rai said, “Well I just have to say that anybody who is doing good to represent the country and anyone who is working or speaking for betterment of whatever occasion, be it sport, be it art or be it music, I think that’s wonderful and that’s what needs to be done.”
Salman’s selection was criticised by several members of the Indian sports fraternity, including Milkha Singh and 2012 London Olympics wrestling bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt.
Salim Khan responded to the criticism by reminding Milkha Singh that it was films that revived his legacy in the Indian consciousness.
Salim was referring to Farhan Akhtar-starring biopic on Milkha Singh, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which was a huge hit in 2013.
Milkha Singh, on the other hand, has responded to Salim Khan’s comments by saying that the movie industry hasn’t done any favour by making a film on him.
“It’s okay they have made a film on me. I don’t think that the movie industry has made a favour to me by making a film on my life.
“If they have any function, will they put any sportsmen as their chairman or ambassador? I gave my story for Re.1 and it is not a little thing. The movie made crores.
“If Salman Khan’s father is saying that Milkha Singh has said anything wrong, then I don’t agree to it, because the entire nation is saying that I am right and they are with me,” Singh was quoted as saying by Times Now news channel.
