PM ready to amend Protection of Women against Violence Act

LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Monday, invited Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to address concerns of religious parties on Protection of Women against Violence Act, recently passed by the Punjab Assembly.

After the meeting, Maulana Rehman said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is ready to address the concerns and, if need to be, make amends in the act.

The decision will be taken tomorrow after listening to all stakeholders, he added.

The new law criminalizes domestic violence, physical, psychological and verbal abuse. It also underlines cybercrime and stalking as a crime punishable against women.

In 2013, more than 5,800 cases of violence against women were reported in Punjab alone. Punjab has the highest rate of violence against women as compare to other provinces.

Rehman termed the Women Protection Bill as a humiliation of husband.
