KP proposes $12 billion hydel power projects under CPEC


WEB DESK: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K.P) government has proposed as many as 29 hydel power projects (3,902 MW) at an estimated cost of $12 billion to be included in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, it is learnt.

According to documents available with Business Recorder, as many as 3 hydel power projects of 57 MW capacity at an estimated cost of $124 million for short-term (2015/16), 5 projects of 214 MW with an estimated cost of $673 million for medium term (2018/19) and 21 projects of 3,631 MW at an estimated cost of $11.15 billion for long term (2020/21).

These projects were discussed in a meeting of Parliamentary Committee on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed in the chair at Parliament House on Monday. According to documents, the KP government has completed a feasibility study of 18 energy projects including Shigokach HPP (Hydel Power Project) , Lower Dir, 102 MW, estimated cost of $320 million; Ghor Band HPP, Shangla, 21 MW, cost of $74 million; Batakundi HPP, Manserhra, 96 MW, cost $368 million; Naran Dam HPP, Mansehra, 188 MW, cost of $440 million; Balakot HPP, Mansehra, 300 MW, estimated cost of $685 million; Sharmai HPP, Upper Dir, 150 MW, cost of $359 million; Jameshill More Lasht, Chitral, 260 MW, cost of $616 million; Istaro-Booni HPP, Chitral, 72 MW, cost of $276 million; Mujigram-Shaghore HPP, Chitral, 64 MW, cost of $182 million; Shushgal-Zhendoli, Chotral, 144 MW, cost $288 million, Shogo-Sin, Chitral, 132 MW, cost $270 million; Gahrit-Swirlasht HPP, Chitral, 377 MW, cost of $1.8 billion; Boonizait (Tore More Kar) Chitral, 350 MW, at an estimated cost of $753 million; Laspur Marigram HPP Chitral, 230 MW, cost of $552 million; Barikot Patrak HPP, Upper Dir, 47 MW, an estimated cost of $148 million and Patrak-Shringal HPP, Upper Dir capacity of 22 MW with an estimated cost of $83 million.

The three projects whose feasibility has been initiated are, Torcamp-Guddubar HPP Chitral, Capacity 409 MW with an estimated cost of $1.5 billion, Kari-Mushkur HPP Chitral, 446 MW, cost of $1.75 billion and Gabral-Kalam HPP Swat of 110 MW capacity and an estimated cost of $413 million.

The documents further reveal that the KP government also wants to start Munda-Mohmand Dam of 750 MW capacity at an estimated cost of $1.5 billion. The feasibility study of the project has been completed while its storage capacity is 1.2 MAF. The Munda-Mohmand Dam would irrigate 15,000 acres of land. The dam would also control floods and its detailed design is expected to be completed by the end June 2016. After an in-camera meeting of the Committee, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed told media that the Energy Ministry of KP government would discuss the Hydel Power Projects with the Federal Ministry for Water and Power. He said that after discussion, the PC-1s of the projects would be submitted to Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms for approval.
