Anyone not performing won’t be considered: Haroon Rasheed

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Chief Selector Haroon Rasheed has made it clear that current form or performances would remain the sole criteria for selection in the team even if the concerned player is the skipper.

“If a player doesn’t perform, then automatically he won’t be considered for future assignments”, He said in response to a question regarding Twenty-20 skipper Shahid Afridi who has indicated he may reverse his decision to retire after the upcoming World event in India.

Haroon said that it is totally a player’s prerogative to retire from the game or not. “We cannot force anyone to retire, nor can we force a player to give it in writing if he wants to retire as there was no such rule in any other cricket-playing country,” he told APP.

However, earlier the PCB had also asked its cricketers to officially retire before acquiring a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the Masters Champions League (MCL).

Some quarters said that PCB needs to set some rules regarding a player’s retirement. For example, if a player wants retirement from cricket then he should be made to give it in writing to the PCB so that if in the near future he thinks of having second thoughts, the PCB disallowed him from doing so.

Haroon said rules like this could not be framed “as this goes on in every cricketing country but if a captain or a player does not perform in the team then automatically he won’t be selected”.

Haroon also refuted all speculations that Sarfraz Ahmed will replace Azhar Ali as captain of the One Day team.

Some reports said PCB was likely to appoint Sarfraz as the ODI captain after seeing his performance in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) T20. Azhar led Lahore Qalandars in the league which was unable to qualify for the play-offs while Sarfraz headed Quetta Gladiators which was the tournament’s runner-up. Reports also said that after the retirement of Twenty-20 skipper Shahid Afridi, Sarfraz will also lead the green-shirts in that format of the game.

Haroon contradicted the report. “This report is totally baseless and does not have any weight in it.” He further said that Ahmed Shahzad was not in form but will be selected in future if he regained form.
