Sonam Kapoor upset over ‘Neerja’ not releasing in Pakistan

WEB DESK: Bollywood starlet Sonam Kapoor is “disheartened” that her upcoming true-life inspired drama “Neerja” will not release across the border.

The movie, slated to release in India today, has been banned by Pakistan for allegedly showing the country in bad light, a fact denied by the actress.

Sonam plays slain flight attendant Neerja Bhanot in the film.

The actress took to Twitter to express her disappointment about her biopic being banned in Pakistan.

“Extremely disheartened that Neerja isn’t releasing this Friday in Pakistan. She was awarded by them & I hope they will salute her again,” Sonam tweeted.

“She saved Pakistani lives, and I can guarantee that Pakistan hasn’t been shown in a poor light, I really hope and pray Neerja releases When Neerja releases worldwide and people see how fair the film is, I’m hopeful that it will result in a solution to a release in Pakistan,” the actress said.

Ram Madhvani directorial, Neerja is based on the tragic tale of Indian flight attendant, Neerja Bhanot’s murder when a a Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked in Karachi on 5 September 1986.

The movie also stars veteran actor Shabana Azmi as Neerja’s on screen mother.

Neerja Bhanot won the Ashok Chakra, making her the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime military award for bravery.She was also awarded the Tamgha-e-Insaaniyat by the Pakistani government.
