Section of employment of children act challenged in LHC

LAHORE: A petition, challenging Section 2(III) of Employment of Children Act 1991, was filed on Tuesday in the Lahore High Court.

The petition was filed by Soobay Khan through advocate Sheraz Zaka submitting that as per section 2(III) of Employment of Children Act 1999, a child had been defined as a person who was below or had attained the age of 14 years.

But, the section was in conflict with Article 25 of the constitution, wherein, a child had been defined as anyone below the age of 16, he added. He pleaded the court to declare Section 2(III) of Employment of Children Act 1991 as unconstitutional.

The petitioner also questioned elimination of child labour from brick kilns, construction sites and roads and pleaded the court to issue directions for enforcement of Section 3 & 14 of Employment of Children Act 1991 as well as the provisions of Punjab Destitute and Neglected Children Act 2004.
