ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Tuesday restored Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Rashida Yaqoob membership and suspended the Election Tribunal decision of PP-78 Jhang.
The two-member bench comprising Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman and Justice Faisal Arab heard the electoral case against Maulana Mohammed Ahmed Ludhiyanvi of PP-78 Jhang.
During the course of proceedings, the court was informed that Sheikh Muhammed Yaqoob’s wife submitted nomination papers after his papers were rejected and won the elections, but Election Tribunal declared her victory notification void on the basis of her husband’s papers and declared Maulana Ahmed Ludhiyanvi winning candidate, on which Rashida Yaqoob filed appeal against Tribunal decision in Supreme Court.
The court suspended Election Tribunal decision over request of Rashida Yaqoob and restored PML-N MPA Rashida Yaqoob membership on stay order.
Election Tribunal had declared Rashida Yaqoob ineligible over not revealing assets.
Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan appeared on behalf of Ahmed Ludhiyanvi while Advocate Shahzad Shoukat represented the petitioner in the case.
The court after hearing the arguments of both lawyers suspended ET verdict, restored Yaqoob’s membership.
The apex court issued notice to parties concerned and adjourned hearing of the case till February 24.
