Salman Taseer’s murderer Mumtaz Qadri hanged

RAWALPINDI: Convicted for the murder of former Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, Mumtaz Qadri was executed in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail early Monday morning, Aaj News reported.

According to the reports, Qadri was hanged after President Mamnoon Hussain dismissed his clemency appeal.

Mumtaz Qadri shot dead Salman Taseer in Islamabad in 2011, a high profile murder that shocked the country.

But he was hailed as a hero by some Islamist groups and thousands of hardline activists protested to show their support for Qadri at the time.

Following the execution, security forces have been put on alert.
