KARACHI: Renowned playwright Fatima Surraiya Bajia, whose dramas captivated generations of Pakistanis passed away after protracted illness on Wednesday. She was 86.
She was laid to rest on Thursday at the Gizri Graveryard amid friends and family.
Fondly known as Bajia, she was a voice for the suppressed of the society. She stood for women rights and her stories reflected her stance.
Her dramas Shama, Aroosa, Afshan and Tasweer are remembered for their promising characters.
She was awarded the Pride of Performance and Japan’s civilian awards among many others.
She never attended formal school and was taught at home and from the numerous books she had.
Her brother Anwar Maqsood is a renowned satirist and his nephew Bilal Maqsood a popular singer.
