First Art & Design institution to introduce 3D printing

KARACHI: The Department of Visual Studies at University of Karachi is the first Art & Design institution in Pakistan to introduce 3D printing.

A University official said Friday that the 3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file.

It has many application from making prototypes for manufacture, engineering, jewelry making as design, architectural models, replicating, making medical prosthetics and more advanced versions can develop organ replacement, cartilage grafts, and nerve regeneration.

Large scale 3D printers have also been used to mass produce full scale houses in China in less than 3 hours. Chairperson Dr. Duriya Kazi said that we are proud to support our own the 3D printer at the Department that was built from scratch by Ali Yousuf.

We acquired the printer in 2015, and Ali Yusuf has been training students to use the facility, she added.
