Ex-cricketers bash PCB over lack of vision, wisdom

ISLAMABAD: Former national cricketers have bashed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over some of the decisions it had made in recent times terming it sheer incompetency and lack of vision, wisdom on the part of the board.

Whether it is venue and timing of Pakistan Super League (PSL), the selection of squad for Twenty-20 World Cup or handling of some other issues of players, PCB has always come up with unclear mind.

“The mindset of PCB is vague. The board officials don’t know how to manage things which shows their complete incompetency,” said former captain Amir Sohail while talking to APP.

He said `Mickey Mouse’ cricket was being played at PSL, adding, the pitches made by PCB were sub-standard due to which crowd was unable to see high scoring matches.

Replying to a question regarding selection of team for T20 World Cup, he said Khurram Manzoor was selected in the squad despite the fact that he was not playing in PSL, which was beyond understanding.

“Zulfiqar Babar should have been in the team as he was the only spinner in PSL operating with authority and batsmen were unable to hit him,” Amir mentioned. He said there was no selection criteria as the selectors select players without any reason and then drop them without any reason, making a mockery of things.

The former captain said Pakistan cricket could not prosper in the way PCB was handling affairs. “India had launched IPL after they became champions in 2007, and the league produced a number of quality players for them, but unfortunately not only timing of PSL was ill but Pakistan would not be benefitted from it as far as grooming of players was concerned.” Former Test Cricketer Shoaib Mohammad lashed out at the selectors for dropping opener Ahmed Shahzad from the World Cup squad.

“Our selectors are incompetent and don’t know what type of a team is picked for a mega event like this. Naming inexperienced players in a big tournament like this is the lack of skills which the selectors don’t have,” he said.

Shoaib said first the selectors had shaken Ahmed’s confidence by dropping him from the ODI team against England last year and now they are completely destroying him. “What confidence would be left in Ahmed after this,” he said adding this will disturb the team’s opening combination which can result in loss in the mega event.

Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir demanded for removal of non- cricketers from the board saying no else can run the PCB better then a cricketer. “If anyone is appointed to run the cricket affairs or given any responsibility in the board then his background should be checked first,” he said.

Former Test Cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz said PSL would have been gone too much better it had happened in Pakistan. He said if our team loses in a series our players and management should accept the responsibility rather than playing the blame game. He said our selectors should be removed as they are the ones who are destroying cricket.
