Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister for Information Moula Bux Chandio alongwith Sindh Food Minister Nasir Shah, Senator Saeed Ghani, MPAs Sikandar Shoro and Lal Chand Okrani at a joint conference alleged that those who had formed the alliance against the PPP, had always won asembly seats through engineered elections.
“These elements hold no threat for the PPP as they do not carry public support or mandate,” said Chandio.
He claimed that not a single case based on ill-will or political grudge was framed against any politician during the tenure of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto while there was not a single political worker in jail during previous tenure of the PPP.
Sindh Minister for Food Nasir Shah said there was no famine-like situation anywhere in Thar nor any food starvation case was registered.
He said there were other reasons for the number of minors’ deaths in Thar. Those were lack of awareness about handling of neonates and mothers and delayed arrival of the ailing child to a medical facility.
He said medical facilities available at the Civil Hospital in Mithi were far better than medical centers in other districts.
The Sindh government had focused on upgrading the civic and health facilities in Thar and therefore, there was no complaint about paucity of required medical facilities at the Civil Hospital in Mithi while the strength of doctors and paramedics was also as per need, he added.
The minister said the committee formed on directives of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had recently visited Thar.
The committee members, he said, took the officers of certain local departments and newly elected local bodies representatives on board and obtained necessary information from them about the ongoing situation in Thar.
He said the committee had prepared necessary recommendations and presented them to the Sindh Chief Minister for necessary action.
The committee had recommended for provision of free wheat to the local population either at the rate of 50 kilogram per family or as per national identity card, but the newly elected local government representatives suggested that wheat should be provided to the Thar people at half price, he added.
The Sindh government, he said, had decided to carve out a foolproof mechanism to ensure complete transparency in all matters.
PPP Karachi division’s Information Secretary Lateef Mughal and Deputy Information Secretary Syed Manzoor Abbas were also present in the press conference.
