Pakistan to play role in defusing Saudi Arabia-Iran tensions: Ahsan

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal on Monday said Pakistan was fully alive to the happenings in the Middle East and assured the members that Pakistan would play a positive role in defusing tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

“It has been the policy of the government to promote unity and solidarity amongst the Muslim Ummah,” said Ahsan Iqbal while responding to a point of order raised by Leader of the Opposition Syed Khurshid Shah in the National Assembly.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad said Pakistan enjoyed brotherly relations with both Saudi Arabia and Iran. He said we would not want the situation aggravating as it would have far-reaching implications for the whole region.

Earlier, Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah drew attention of the House towards the recent tension in relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

He said this was a sensitive issue carrying implications for the region as well as the Muslim countries.

He said the advisor on foreign affairs should brief the House about Pakistan’s stance and point of view on the matter.

PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan should not remain oblivious to the situation and play its role to reduce the tension between the two countries.

Other members said that Pakistan should play the role of a mediator on the sensitive issue. They said a delegation should be sent to both the countries to defuse the tension.
