Pakistan to play positive role as key OIC member: Sartaj

ISLAMABAD:  Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Tuesday informed the National Assembly that Pakistan, as an important member of the OIC, would continue to play its positive role.

“We do hope that both Saudi Arab and Iran would restore dialogue and resolve their differences at diplomatic level,” he said while responding to a point of order.

He said that being friend of Saudi Arabia and Iran, Pakistan would try to bridge the divide and improve relationship between the two Islamic states.

He said it was a sensitive matter as the situation was changing rapidly, adding that Pakistan would play a positive and balanced role in this regard.

The Leader of Opposition Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah and other parliamentary leaders expressed their concerns about arising of the situation following escalation of tension between the two brotherly countries of Muslim Ummah.

He agreed with suggestion of leader of the opposition that an in-camera briefing should be arranged for members of the parliament over the issue.

The advisor assured the House that parliament would be taken into confidence on this important issue, adding that it was responsibility of the government to protect Pakistan’s security.

Sartaj Aziz said the government of Pakistan had expressed concerns over the escalation of tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

He said the attack on Saudi Embassy in Tehran was against the international norms and unfortunate.

Aziz said Pakistan wanted peaceful solution of the problem as terrorist forces could take advantage from tension within Muslim Ummah.

He said that he would meet Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir soon to discuss the latest situation.

The advisor dispelled the notion that Pakistan’s foreign policy was not good and added that during the last two and half year Pakistan did a lot on diplomatic level.

“Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif during the Gulf War played active role and visited six countries of the region to defuse tension,” he said.

He said unity of Muslim Ummah was need of the hour as the region was passing through a critical juncture.

Aziz said Pakistan should play an active role in defusing tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran as both were very close to them.
