KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Tuesday held a protest demonstration in front of provincial office of Election Commission of Pakistan in Karachi demanding speedy delegation of powers to the local government and to announce election schedule for over 9,500 reserved seats in the provincial local bodies, Aaj News reported.
While addressing during the protest, MQM leader Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan said Sindh government’s purpose behind holding next phase of local government elections in abeyance was to continue corruption campaign.
The protest was held against failure of ECP in holding polls against the seats of mayors and deputy mayors as well as chairman and vice-chairman of municipal corporation and committee despite passage of more than a month since all three phases of local government were completed across the province.
MQM’s nominated mayor for Karachi Waseem Akhter said other parties should also support them for getting powers for elected local government representatives.
The MQM leaders said that Sindh government was trying to create hindrances in empowerment of masses at grass root levels.
They also took strong exception to rampant mismanagement in Karachi leading to collapse in civic system that adding to the misery of the people.
