Dr Asim Hussain handed over to NAB on 14-day remand

KARACHI: An accountability court handed over Dr Asim Hussain on a 14-day remand to the National Accountability Bureau on Tuesday, Aaj News reported.

On December 21, the Sindh government appointed Nisar Ahmed as new special public prosecutor in Dr Asim Hussain case, worsening a rift between the provincial government and Pakistan Rangers. Earlier, Mushtaq Jahangiri was the special prosecutor in Dr Asim case related to corruption and terror financing.

Deputy Superintendent of Rangers (DSP) Inayatullah Durrani, who was the complainant in the FIR against Dr Hussain, also filed a constitutional petition requesting the Sindh High Court to restrain the provincial government from changing prosecutor Mushtaq Jahangiri.

He said there was ample evidence about the involvement of Dr Hussain in corrupt practices as well as treatment and harbouring of terrorists at his hospital’s branches in Clifton and North Nazimabad. The petitioner alleged that the Sindh government was pressurising the home department to replace Mushtaq Jahangiri because he had refused to approve the report for release of Dr Asim.

Dr Asim Hussain was arrested on August 26 this year on charges of indulging in massive corruption and terror financing. He remained in detention of Rangers for 90 days and reportedly named names in corruption from the Sindh government.

After Dr Asim told the court that his life was in danger in the Rangers’ custody he was handed over to the NAB. “My life is in danger, I am being tortured in custody,” he had said during a hearing on December 7.

“I deny all charges leveled against me. I’m still being threatened, they want to kill me, if I die the system will be responsible,” said an emotional Dr Asim during his court appearance amid tight security.

“If they want to kill me do so in an encounter. But I can not stand this torture every day.”

He asked the court not to hand him over to the Rangers.
