ISLAMABAD: Former cricketer Danish Kaneria has said that all-rounder Shahid Afridi cannot be trusted when it comes to performance because one never knows when he is able to perform or not.
Kaneria said Afridi’s performance is not good in batting or bowling. “If Afridi performs in a one odd match, his place in the team will be confirmed for a whole year,” Pakpassion.net quoted him as saying.
He said the Pakistan Cricket Board should recruit those people who have understanding of the game. “I think that the chief selector doesn’t even know the names of top ten domestic bowlers in the country,” he said.
He said Pakistan should have taken some genuine spinners with them on to the New Zealand tour. “Imad Wasim is a part-timer and Afridi is an orthodox bowler,” he said.
He said bowlers like Rahat Ali, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan get discouraged when players like Mohammad Amir get preference over them. “What is our management doing? What strategies have we come up with? What batsmen have we produced over the last few years?” he questioned.
Kaneria said talent is there in Pakistan but need to be encouraged. “Talent comes from the lower and the middle class societies and they also have to feed their families. The player who has talent will eventually end up saying Thank You Very Much if he’s discouraged for years,” he said.
