KARACHI: In an interesting turn of events the investigation officer during a hearing for Dr Asim Hussain in the Sindh High Court on Friday revealed that he had found no evidence against the former minister who had been in the Rangers’ custody for over 90 days.
The investigation officer SP Altaf Hussain presented his report in the court where he revealed that the allegations against Dr Asim could not be proven. He said that Dr Asim should be released on bail.
Quoting an example from his report the IO said that one of the terrorists Zafar Baloch was brought to the Ziauddin Hospital by a rickshaw driver.
The Rangers lawyer argued that in the Anti Terrorism Court police does not have the powers to release the defendant.
Dr Asim during the hearing told the judge that he was being wrongly framed in the case. “The list of terrorists treated at Ziauddin Hospital which has been produced by the Rangers is fake.”
In the last hearing Dr Asim had said that his life was in danger and the Rangers were torturing him in custody to obtain a confession.
Dr Asim has been transferred to the National Accountability Bureau.
Director General NAB, Sindh Lieutenant Colonel Siraj ul Naeem (Retd) has already confirmed that his Bureau had established several cases of corruption against Dr Asim and his organisation would initiate a formal inquiry against him after conclusion of police investigations.
The Sindh Rangers registered a case against Dr Asim at a North Nazimabad police station last month. He was accused of assisting and sheltering terrorists.
Dr Asim was serving as chairman of the Higher Education Commission when he was arrested.
