Sami will be given Indian citizenship under Section 6 of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 which allows citizenship through a certificate of naturalisation to applicants with distinguished contribution in the field of science, philosophy, art, literature, world peace or human progress, Rediff reported.
The Lahore-born artist first arrived in India in 2001, on a visitor’s visa with the validity of one year, which was issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
Sami was granted the right to stay in India on humanitarian grounds after his Pakistani passport expired earlier this year. Sami did not renew his Pakistani passport.
Last month, Pakistan refused to confirm renunciation of nationality by Adnan Sami over his alleged disrespectful behaviour towards his national identity.
