Punjab will set up digital libraries: Minister

LAHORE: Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan has claimed that his government will set up digital libraries in computer labs already existing in more than 6,000 schools and colleges to enable more people to get access to information.

In his speech in an opening session of a three-day international conference on “information management and libraries” organised by the Punjab University Department of Information Management at the university’s Doctor Pervaiz Hassan Environmental Law Auditorium on Wednesday, the minister told his audience his government was working on a nation-wide network called the “e-Learn Punjab”.

“Unfortunately, we cannot pay attention to libraries as a nation. The government is planning to establish a vast network of libraries and there will be no territory in Punjab where there is no library. It is trying to improve all levels of primary to higher education and technical and vocational education. The Punjab University has improved manifold under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran and because of his initiatives, the university will move forward and get the best place in the world.”

In a speech, Dr Kamran said, “The invention of the Internet has made access to information easier and that’s why the subject of library and information management has gained importance.”

In her keynote speech on “information and library services in connected world,” Professor Dr Sanda Elederz said, “Information environment has changed creating new challenges. The behaviour to get information has also changed.”

She then stressed that development in information communication technology storage and applications was growing remarkable and had become a challenge to information management field, saying libraries needed to change from local perspectives to a more connected perspective.

Briefing about recent developments in the Department of Information Management, she thanked Dr Kamran for his moral and financial support, admitting that positive changes could never happen without his encouragement.

The conference continuing till Friday will also draw in chief guest Rana Tanvir Hussain, the federal Minister for Defence Production. Those also present were American Professor Dr Sanda Elederz, Department of Information Management Professor Dr Chairperson Kanwal Ameen, faculty members, librarians and students.
