KARACHI: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Thursday expressed satisfaction over the two-year long ongoing operation in the city that has restored peace and boosted business in the metropolis.
Addressing a meeting to review the law and order situation in the city during his day-long visit, the Prime Minister said the operation in Karachi was launched with the consensus of all political parties and stakeholders.
The meeting of the law and order was attended among others by Governor Sindh Ishrat ul Ibad, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and officials of Police, Rangers and law enforcement agencies.
He said all political parties were onboard, when a unanimous decision was taken to launch the operation against extremists and terrorists.
He said the operation was being conducted against criminal elements and was not against any political party.
The Prime Minister said when the operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched, there was fear of major blowback. However it was not as severe as feared, he added.
He expressed the confidence that situation in the city would further improve in the days ahead.
He said there had been a marked improvement in law and order as target killings, kidnappings for ransom, and extortion had almost ended.
He said the people of Karachi have the same views and all those involved in the operation, need to be lauded and appreciated for their hard work to bring peace in the city.
He referred to the attack on Rashid Godil and said the perpetrators would not escape the law of the land.
He also recalled the incident of attack on Punjab Home Minister and said the law enforcement agencies have made progress and would apprehend the ones involved.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said following the operation Zarb-e-Azb, the terrorists and extremists had weakened considerably and were not able to carry out any large scale terrorist activity.
He said the remaining few too would be eliminated and the country would be rid of this menace for good.
The Prime Minister recalled his meeting with a group of Karachi businessmen during his recent visit to Belarus and said they too informed him that law and order situation in the city had improved considerably and now the foreign investors and importers were also satisfied with it.
The Prime Minister congratulated the Police, the Rangers, administration, the Chief Minister and Governor, under whose leadership the city was becoming peaceful.
He also lauded the role of intelligence agencies for their role in this regard.
