Murtaza Abbasi stresses Kashmir issue settlement in accordance with UN resolutions

ISLAMABAD: Acting Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi Monday said that Pakistan strongly supports Kashmiris’ right of self-determination and resolution of Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

He stressed upon the world community for its support for an amicable solution as per the aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, said a fax message received here from New York.

Murtaza Javed Abbasi was addressing the plenary session of the 4th World Speakers’ Conference being held in New York, United States.

He said the unsettled dispute remains the flash-point for regional peace and stability and is very much alive on the United Nations’ agenda.

Recalling the outstanding UN Security Council’s Resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, he said that those resolutions call for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination through a free and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices besides ruling out any alternative to plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.

Murtaza Javed said that progress can never be achieved in the absence of peace and conducive environment which is linked to economic and social development.

Acting Speaker said that Pakistan has been braving the onslaught of global terrorism for almost two decades rendering great sacrifices. He said that Pakistan is determined to root out this menace.

However, the world must address the root-causes of terrorism especially in the “vulnerable South Asia”.

He said that outstanding disputes continue to aggravate in the South region preventing it from realizing its tremendous economic and social potential.

Murtaza Javed said that it is time to give people their inalienable rights, paving the way for a sustainable peace and development.

Speaking about the role of democratic institutions in peace and sustainable development, he said that the role of democratic institutions is vital and essential in advancing the new sustainable goals in enacting laws, approving budgets and holding governments to account in implementing their commitments.

He said that other stakeholders can play a supportive role for Parliaments in exercising their oversight and accountability functions.

The adoption of a new development agenda marks a success for the international community and continuing relevance of cooperative multilateriasm for empowering people and promoting prosperity for all across the globe, he added.

Murtaza Javed said that good governance, comprehensive policies and strengthened institutions will also be critical enablers for the post-2015 development agenda.

The Acting Speaker called for giving people, voice in the decision-making processes for sustained growth and development.

He said that the absence of synergy between democratic governance, rule of law and development mechanisms has remained the main hurdle in achieving the MDGs, which needs to be addressed effectively in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).He said that the Parliament of Pakistan prides itself to shift its development agenda from MDGs to SDGs.

Apprising the participants, he said that the present National Assembly of Pakistan established a Parliamentary task force on this critical issue which has enabled all provinces to create similar parliamentary groups in all the respective provincial assemblies.

He said these groups have regularly met to chalk out a comprehensive plan of action to monitor and oversee the development targets of their respective governments.

Murtaza Javed said that with the concerted efforts of the executive, parliamentary task forces and stakeholders, all targets set would be achieved.
