PESHAWAR: Miss Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli, a woman MPA of QWP and senior parliamentarian became first woman legislator of the province to preside over the proceeding of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
Unlike, National Assembly, Senate and Sindh Assembly, no woman legislator have ever presided over the proceedings of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
During previous federal government, Dr Fehmida Mirza was the first woman Speaker of the National Assembly while Shehla Raza is Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly. However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was lacking such experience. The seat of the Deputy Speaker is running vacant in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly since the inclusion of the Imtiaz Shahid Qureshi as Law Minister in the provincial cabinet.
On the first day of the current session started on October 23, 2014, the opposition benches have protested the vacant constitutional slot in the provincial legislature and were demanding the announcement of schedule for filling the seat. However, to prevent criticism, the Speaker prolonged the session and at last changed names on the panel of chairmen with Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli atop of the list.
Talking to media before the session, she termed it a great honour for her that she had become first ever female who presided over a “Pakhtuns Jirga” (KP Assembly) in the parliamentary history of KP. All the members of the assembly warmly welcomed her as presiding officer by thumping the desk. For first time Miss Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli was elected to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly (NWFP Assembly) in 1988 and in 2003 elected as Senator of PPP-Sherpao. During Musharraf regime she had served as minister of state for information and broadcasting and minister of state for social welfare.
