Khursheed Shah terms withdrawal of de-seating motions victory of democracy

ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah on Thursday termed withdrawal of de-seating motions by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) a victory of democracy and the parliament.

Speaking on floor of the House after MQM and JUI-F lawmakers withdrew their motions, he said “Withdrawal of the motions is not the defeat and triumph of anyone but the victory of democracy and the parliament.”

He was of the view that the act of withdrawing the motions had not only given protection to the PTI members but also their voters.

“We believe that punishment for others mistake, should not be given to voters,” he said referring to PTI MNAs, who had decided to stay away from the Parliament until the matter of the de-seating motions was resolved.

On behalf of the opposition, he said “I want to thank leaders of both the parties for withdrawing their respective motions on the request of the government and the opposition.”

Although, he said, the stance of MQM and JUI-F was legal but keeping in view the present scenario, the decision would bring positive impact on the politics of the country.

The opposition leader said democracy had been restored in the country after great sacrifices rendered by the people and political leaders.

He said there was neither permanent enemy nor friend in politics, adding that it was the time to forget the past and move forward to tackle the challenges confronting the country.

Khursheed Shah also appreciated the role of Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, saying “Your role is appreciable,

what you have done will be written in history with golden words.” He said despite criticism, “You (the speaker) had not thought about the revenge and honored sanctity of the chair.”

JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that withdrawal of the motions became possible due to sincere efforts of the political forces.

He said it was the stance of his party that JUI-F’s reservations should be addressed, adding that the party would work for strengthening of democracy and supremacy of the parliament.

He also informed the House that MQM chief also phoned him and discussed the issue of de-seating of PTI lawmakers.

Maulana Fazl also appreciated the role of Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

Senior leader of MQM Dr Farooq Sattar thanked Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah and other parliamentary leaders for making sincere efforts to resolve the issue amicably.

He said it was the point of view of MQM that constitution and law should be kept intact while withdrawing the de-seating motions. He said strengthening of democracy was linked to constitution and upholding the law.

Leader of Awami Muslim League Sheikh Rashid said he thought after the speaker’s ruling there was no need of bringing de-seating resolutions.

He said there was no need to discuss a member who was not present in the house.

Tariqullah welcomed the motions withdrawal and expressed the hope that PTI would play the role of a real opposition.

Dr Ghazi Gulab Jamal said the withdrawal decision reflected political wisdom and a victory of democracy.
