ISLAMABAD: Indian police arrested senior Hurriyet leader and the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party,Shabbir Ahmed Shah, in New Delhi on Saturday.

The police took into custody Shabbir Ahmed Shah along with party leaders, Muhammad Abdullah Tari and Zamir Ahmed Sheikh, from the airport soon after their arrival and detained them at a guest house, KMS reported.

Shabbir Shah had arrived in the Indian capital along with a party delegation to meet the Pakistan PM’s Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz.

The Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi has invited the Hurriyet leaders to meet Sartaj Aziz during a reception party being hosted by the High Commission in the honour of Sartaj Aziz on Monday.

Talking to KMS over phone just before his arrest, Shabbir Ahmed Shah said that the increasing popularity of the Kashmir liberation movement had frustrated the Indian government.

Earlier, talking to mediamen in Srinagar before leaving for New Delhi, Shabbir Ahmed Shah said that India and Pakistan talks must go on. “The talks must go on to subside the pressure on both sides of the Line of Control,” he added.
