WEB DESK: Train accidents are as old as the independence of Pakistan. Here is a list of major accidents that occurred in Pakistan;
At least 500 people died when three trains collided with each other.
The Quetta Express was hit by another train (Karachi Express), which had missed a signal. The collision had caused several of the cars to derail. The derailed cars were subsequently hit by a third train (Tezgam). The three trains were carrying over 3,000 passengers altogether.
The Quetta Express was detained at Sarhad due to a fault in the train’s brake system. The starter were set to green while the crew were working under the affected coach. Meanwhile, the Karachi Express was given a go ahead signal at Mirpur Mathelo to proceed to Sarhad.
Although Karachi Express applied an emergency brake but due to low brake power the train did not stop immediately and hit the third train (Tezgam).
On November 3, 2009, Allama Iqbal Express collided head-on with Super Parcel Express moving from the opposite side. Relief work began when locals gathered at the site, local media reported. But the tough terrain made it difficult for relief activities to continue.
At least 14 people died in the accident.
The latest accident occurred in Gujranwala on Thursday when a four bogeys of a special train carrying personnel of the army and their families over turned near lower river Chenab.
Up till the death toll of the accident is 19, while rescue work is still going on.
