ISLAMABAD: National Highway Authority (NHA) has set up Highway Research & Training Center at Burhan, near Hassan Abdal to maintain the good condition of national highways and to develop the indigenous standards of pavement and train the skilled engineers.
An official of the HRTC told that the centre offers research and training services to road and highway engineers, so that they can coup with the challenges in more economic and efficient manner.
The official said that the need for the HRTC was felt as in Pakistan, about 50 per cent of national highways are in damaged condition, partly because of lack of pavement standards that match conditions peculiar to Pakistan.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with its technical mode of cooperation has installed state of the art equipment in the laboratory of the HRTC and dispatched Japanese experts and sent the functionaries of the HRTC on training to Japan.
He said that before the setting up of this center, no proper framework was available for such research but now NHA has taken the much needed initiative.
The center imparts training, not only to NHA officials but also provincial departments related to highways and other civic agencies and is expected to achieve a center-of-excellence status among SAARC and Central Asian Countries within a few years,he added.
