KARACHI: Sindh Governor, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan on Thursday promulgated Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (Amendment) Ordinance- 2015.
The ordinance shall come into force with immediate effect, said an official statement.
The newly amended ordinance aimed at, to provide and maintain the safe and secure water supply for drinking and domestic use to residents of Karachi. This is to assure the smooth and uninterrupted flow from the source to destination and to take stern action against water theft, illegal hydrants, outlet connections and damaging to water trunks.
” In Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Act, 1996, after section 14, the following new section shall be inserted:
” 14-A, (1) If any person who damages, punctures water trunk mains ranging from eighteen inch dia to eighty four inch dia, canals, pumping stations, conduits, siphons, reservoirs and chambers of the board for any purpose including selling of water or taking illegal connections,(b) any one who establishes illegal hydrant for industrial, commercial or residential use , and (c) any one who encroaches upon the land of the board shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years and with fine which may extend to rupees one million or with both.
The offences committed under subsection (1) shall be cognizable. The offences punishable under subsection (1) shall be tried by the Sessions Court.
