KARACHI: Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, along with KWSB Chief, Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi on Thursday reviewed ongoing cleaning of around 18 different major rain drains and nullah running across the metropolis.
On the occasion deputy commissioners of concerned districts told him that pace of work underway on Tipu Sultan – Peechar Nullah, Lyari- PIDC Nullah, Machar Colony Nullah and others has been expedited and all relevant machineries are being used for the purpose.
Siddiqui said urgent completion of the job was needed prior to heavy rain fall that may create flood like situation in the thickly populated metropolis.
This is all the more crucial as vast majority of population is living very close to these nullah and also in the low lying areas hence vulnerable to severe inconvenience, said the Karachi Commissioner.
Accompanied by officials of different Cantonment Boards and other civic bodies in the metropolis, he told media at the Clifton Pumping Station that immediate drainage of water from roads and thoroughfares would be the top most priority of the administration.
He said cleaning of drains would help drainage and for the purpose generators have not only been installed at the sites of work around nullah but would ensured on major thoroughfares to avoid any serious situation during and after rains.
Managing Director, KWSB, Syed Hashim Raza said as per directives of the Commissioner Karachi generators have arranged at seven main pumping stations of KWSB while proper arrangements have been finalized at all 19 small and medium range pumping stations in district South as well as other districts of Karachi.
He expressed his confidence that no problem related to sewage would be faced during monsoons in Karachi.
