WEB DESK: More people die from cancer than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis worldwide every year. You cannot prevent cancer from happening but you can reduce the possibility of obtaining it.
Here are five simple ways to reduce cancer risk.
Say no to tobacco:
Using any type of tobacco means a direct confrontation with cancer. Even if you are not into smoking try to avoid people who smoke around you because exposure to second hand smoking also increases risk of cancer. Ask a health expert about products that can help you out with quitting tobacco.
Eat healthy diet:
Eat plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables. Include grains and beans in your daily diet. Eat foods that can help you boost your immune system for example onions, garlic, walnuts, chia seeds, cinnamon etc.
Avoid sugary foods:
High consumption of sugar on daily basis can slow down your immune system, especially the ones that are involved in killing cancer cells. Study shows that consumption of sugary foods decreases your immune system and increase the risk of breast, colon and prostate cancer.
Exposure to environmental toxins:
Your exposure to heavy metal, dioxins, asbestos and sun should be minimized. Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3 pm. Wear sunglasses and hats. Use sunscreen with sun protection. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. These are just as damaging as natural sunlight.
Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes. This also helps boost the immune system and help secret the toxins from body. Physical activity also helps us stay a healthy weight. This is really important because if you’re overweight, you have a higher risk of cancer.
