PESHAWAR: While Ribbon Campaign held a media sensitization workshop on pro-women laws to refresh journalists’ knowledge on laws related to women welfare, protection and sensitizing them on handling violence against women cases more efficiently.
Journalists from local and mainstream print and electronic media participated in this training workshop held at Peshawar Press Club (PPC) on Wednesday.
This was second of the two media sensitization workshops. The first workshop was organized in Islamabad. The major purpose of these media workshops is to improve the quality and quantity of media coverage of violence against women cases by equipping the media with the proper knowledge and tools and help them report issues professionally.
Addressing the participants of the workshop, Chief Executive, White Ribbon, Omer Aftab mentioned that despite various good pro-women laws, there is no stop to violence against women due to lack of legal awareness as majority of the victims are not even aware of these laws. Lack of awareness about the laws as well as lack of courage to take legal stand is among the major problems at the moment, Omer Aftab added.
White Ribbon, he said has initiated a legal literacy campaign to make women aware of laws related to their protection. Through campaigning advocacy and massive media outreach, the goal of White Ribbon is to aware women of provincial and national laws, so they can exercise their legal rights with complete knowledge and also access referral services.
On this occasion, Shabina Ayaz of the Aurat Foundation gave detailed presentation on several pro-women national and provincial laws to aware journalists about them.
