WEB DESK: Today marks the birthday of Laurence Tureaud also known as Mr T. He turned 63.
With gold chains hanging around his neck, a rugged look with a Mohawk hairstyle inspired by the African Mandikan warrior Mr T portrayed the perfect image of a tough bad boy.
Tureaud was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 21, 1952. He was the youngest son in the family of twelve children. His father who was a minister left the family when Tureaud was only five years of age. With only his mother left to raise him, she tried her best to keep him out of the trouble.
With average grades in school Tureaud found his peace in physical sports. During school, he became a football player and a thrice won the high school wrestling championship. His love towards football earned him a scholarship but with continuous failures he decided to drop out from school.
Later a knee injury kept him from appearing for the Green Bay Packers, a professional football team in Green Bay. He also tried his luck as a military policeman but failed to carry out this profession.
He returned to Chicago and started working as a bouncer and soon he gained a reputation that no one can mess with. According to him, the jewelry that keeps his neck shinning is the one that he took from misbehaving customers. This was also the time when he adopted the name Mr T. Soon with his new resume he got a new job of protecting celebrities. Yes he became a body guard.
After getting in touch with celebs, Sylvester Stallone gave him his big break, in his film, “Rocky lll”. The movie was an instant hit plus his famous quote “I Pity the fool” was also coined by him in this movie.
But the boost that he got from his role in the television drama series “The A-Team” put him on the map.
Mr T also appeared for World Wrestling Entertainment (World Wrestling Federation at that time) with legendary wrestlers like Hulk Hogan and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
In 1990’s Mr T was diagnosed with cancer. He did recover from that disease but in the process he faced a decline in his career.
Currently Mr. T shares his time between his residence in Chicago, Illinois, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has three children with his ex-wife Phillys Clark.
