ISLAMABAD: Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif Monday said the main focus of present government was on improving governance and not to just run the affairs of departments.
Had the previous regimes focused on good governance, the country’s economy and law and order situation would have improved, he said responding to a motion moved by Saeed Ghani in the Senate to discuss the aviation policy with particular reference to the proposal of outsourcing management of major airports.
The minister supported the privatization process, saying the departments privatized during the last governments of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had shown remarkable improvement.
The bank privatized during Muhammad Nawaz Sharif’s tenure had paid around Rs 125 billion to the national exchequer as tax, he added.
Khwaja Asif said the total cost of a private airport constructed in Sialkot was around Rs 3.5 billion, where international flights were also landing. Private sector was running the affairs of top international airports around the world, he added.
The minister said political parties could restore the lights of Karachi with political will. Despite sufficient finances, the previous government ignored Karachi and spent less amount for its development, he added.
Senators Mushahid Hussain Syed, Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, Ilyas Ahmed Bilour, Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, Nauman Wazir, Mohsin Aziz and Muhammad Talha Mehmood took part in the discussion on the motion.
