MACHH: Death-row prisoner Saulat Mirza was hanged at Machh jail today (Tuesday) at 4:30 AM, Aaj News reported.
Mirza, who had been convicted of killing Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC)’s managing director Shahid Hamid, his guard and driver, in Karachi, had his sentence deferred twice before.
His body has been shifted from the jail in an ambulance to an Edhi cold storage in Quetta.
The body will be brought back to Karachi by a Pakistan International Airline (PIA) in the afternoon.
According to the jail officials, following Mirza’s execution, the security was further tightened around the jail and barricades were erected at all the inlets to the town.
The hanging has been supervised by the Judicial magistrate Machh, Hidayatullah.
On Monday a day before his scheduled execution, death row prisoner Mirza met his family for the last time. Saulat’s brothers, sisters and nieces and nephews were among the relatives who arrived at the Machh jail to meet the prisoner.
According to prison sources, before his hanging, 25 to 30 relatives met Mirza in groups of six in a room at the jail.
Mirza was scheduled to be hanged on March 19, but the death row inmate moments before his execution drew media attention when he opened a Pandora box against the chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement causing a stay on his execution. He alleged that murder took place on direct orders of the MQM cheif.
Since television channels aired his video statement, his hanging was postponed multiple times.
A Joint Investigation Team was forced to probe Mirza’s allegations.
Moreover, Mirza’s wife filed a mercy plea to get his death sentence revoked. However, the plea was rejected by the court.
Last week, the Sindh High Court (SHC) dismissed a petition seeking to defer Saulat’s execution and reopening the murder case of MD KESC Shahid Hamid. Meanwhile, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) issued new death warrants for Mirza’s execution at the Machh Jail on May 12 (Tuesday).
