‘Plastic baby’, a rare birth case of Amritsar

Have you ever heard about a “plastic baby” who looks like a rubber doll and sheds skin like that of reptile scales?

A rare birth case took place in Rajasansi area of Amritsar district where a plastic baby was born, a story in India Today said.

The plastic newborns are scientifically known as Collodion babies. The birth of such babies occurs once among six lakh newborns.

The mother of the baby hails from the Rajasansi area of Amritsar district in Punjab.

She looks like a rubber doll and her face appears to be like a fish. Her eyes and lips are red. She is also not able to take feed from her mother, a doctor who attended to the plastic baby, said.

“This is a kind of genetic disorder. It is due to mutation of certain genes and is usually an autosomal recessive, congenital ichthyosis (scaly skin condition),” the website quoted him saying.

However 10% of collodion babies have normal underlying skin, the doctor added.

Reports further claimed that this is the second time such baby was born in Amritsar. Earlier in 2014, the same case took place but the plastic baby died within three days of birth.
