ISLAMABAD: Indian policemen were forced to release District President of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League (JKML) and close aide of senior Hurriyet leader, Masarrat Aalam Butt, after hundreds of people cornered the police vehicle ferrying him in Bandipora.
According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), eyewitnesses told media men that a police party headed by Station House Officer arrested the JKML District President, Showkat Hakeem, after raiding his house at Paribal in Hajin town of the district.
The witnesses maintained that as the news about Showkat Hakim’s arrest spread in the area, hundreds of people blocked the road and forcibly stopped the police vehicle that was carrying him to the local police station.
“Agitated people amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans cornered the police vehicle to ensure the release of JKML leader. Policemen had no option but to release Showkat Hakeem. The agitated people after release of the leader gave a safe passage to the police vehicle,” an eyewitness said.
Meanwhile, the forum patronized by the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, while condemning the police raids at the residence of Showkat Hakeem said that the police were subjecting Hurriyet leaders and activists to political vengeance without any reason.
