Haideri elected Senate Deputy Chairman

ISLAMABAD: Senior politician Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri of Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl Thursday won the election for the office of Deputy Chairman Senate after defeating his rival from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Syed Shibli Faraz.

Haideri secured 74 votes while his rival Shibli Faraz bagged 16 votes out of total 90 valid votes cast through secret ballot.

He enjoyed the support of majority parties like Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Six votes were rejected out of total 96 votes cast in the House of 100 members.

Election for the Deputy Chairman was conducted by Presiding Officer Senator Ishaq Dar as Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani had to proceed to the President House to act as Acting President in absence of President Mamnoon Hussain.

He was nominated Presiding Officer by the Senate Chairman.

Later, the newly elected Deputy Chairman took oath of the office.

Ishaq Dar administered the oath.
