KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Information and Local Government, Sharjeel Inam Memon has promised insurance cover for journalists across the province and compensation for the heirs of martyred journalists.
The provincial information minister gave this assurance at a meeting with a delegation of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) which led by its Secretary General Khurshid Abbasi called on him at his office here, said a PFUJ press release issued here on Monday.
It said that after acceptance of all the journalists’ demands by the provincial information minister, the PFUJ has withdrawn its protest call given for Tuesday.
The delegation included PFUJ Vice President Khurshid Tanvir and HUJ President Khalid Khokhar and General Secretary Iqbal Mallah.
It said that Sharjeel Memon assured the delegation that insurance cover will be provided to journalists working in all the districts.
The PFUJ will provide journalists list to the Information Ministry at the earliest, it added.
It was agreed that the heirs of all the journalists martyred in Sindh will be compensated, it said.
It further said the Sindh government will give grant to PFUJ and press clubs of the province.
The press release said a Journalists Foundation will be established for the welfare of journalists and a summary will be sent to the Chief Minister Sindh for this purpose.
It was also agreed that Munir Sangi murder case will be transferred from Larkana to Karachi, it said.
It was also agreed that journalist colonies will be constructed in all the districts.
Later, PFUJ General Secretary said they are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and expressed the hope that the government will bring to justice the killers of journalists.
