Afghanistan Vs Scotland: 97 for 7 wickets down and then the one Man show of Samiullah Shenwari’s got started who had scored 96 runs off 147 balls and helped Afghanistan to chase 211 runs against Scotland.
Scotland had earlier rallied from 144-8 to make 210, but their search for a first World Cup win is still continued.
They have now lost all 11 matches which have been played by them in three World Cups, surpassing the Netherlands’ previous record of 10 successive defeats from debut.
Shenwari’s innings were the innings of the World Cup so far. Better than Southee’s 7 or McCullum’s 77 or Jayawardene’s 100 or even Wilson’s knock yesterday. Samiullah was playing brilliantly throughout the Afghan innings.
The right arm off break bowler Majid Haq three times attacked for ‘six’ over the leg side, but the length ball on middle and Shenwari had picked out deep midwicket on the boundary in the crucial situation of the match when Afghanistan still needs 19 runs to win.
Haq has gone mad; Shenwari was on his knees and despair, he was the last hope for Afghanistan’s victory, but he delivered his best.
Shenwari said, “I did my job”
That left Afghanistan still 19 short, but Shapoor and Hassan inched nearer and, when Richie Berrington’s final ball of the 49th over was clipped for four, only five were needed from Iain Wardlaw’s six deliveries.
Shapoor could have been run out had Matt Machan’s throw hit the stumps but, from the next delivery, the left hander clipped to the square leg boundary to seal victory.
