Sicilian judge Sergio Mattarella elected Italian president

ROME: Little-known constitutional court judge Sergio Mattarella was elected Italy’s new president on Saturday after four rounds of voting by lawmakers and regional representatives.

The 73-year-old Sicilian, who enjoyed the backing of centre-left Prime  Minister Matteo Renzi, succeeds the hugely popular Giorgio Napolitano, 89, who  is stepping down because of his advanced age.
