ISLAMABAD: Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh on Friday said his Stadium at the Muslim School Ground, Saidpur Road at Rawalpindi will be on the go to host international tournaments in June this year after completition.
Talking to APP, Shahnaz said an astro-turf and a pavilion-building will be constructed there making the stadium all set for the game lovers in June. “This stadium would help in reviving the national game of hockey among the youth,” he said adding he also wants to open an academy in his Stadium.
Shahnaz, who is also the national team coach, said the Punjab Government has released a total of Rupees thirty million grant for the laying of astro-truf and for the construction of the building. “I had a meeting with the Director General Punjab Sports Board who assured me that the stadium will be ready to host matches in June,” he said adding a total of Rs 75 million will be released for the said project.
Shahnaz said things to be done includes the laying of astro-turf,construction of 5000 sitting capacity pavilion, building for players, changing rooms, washrooms and other necessities for the project. “Hopefully the Chief Minister of Punjab will be the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the stadium,” he said.
Shahnaz, while thanking the Punjab government and former MNA Hanif Abbasi, said it is all their efforts through which the city of Rawalpindi has got a Hockey Stadium. “Once the proposed stadium gets complete, I believe a lot of hockey lovers would come here to play,” he said.
