ISLAMABAD: Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh on Tuesday said the hockey stadium at the Muslim School ground, Saidpur Road in Rawalpindi named after him would be completed in June to host international tournaments.
An astro-turf and a pavilion-building would be constructed at the stadium, which would help revive the national game, besides evincing interest among the youth he said talking to APP.
Shahnaz, who is also the national team coach, said he wanted wants to open an academy at the stadium.
He said the Punjab government had already released Rs 30 million out of Rs 75 million for laying the astro-truf and the construction of building.
He said he had a meeting with the Director General Punjab Sports Board, who assured him that the stadium would be ready in June.
Besides laying astro-turf, a pavilion having 5,000 seating capacity pavilion, a building for players, changing rooms, washrooms and other necessities were under construction, he added.
Shahnaz thanked the Punjab government and Hanif Abbasi, former member of National Assembly from Rawalpindi, due to whose efforts the city would have facility to host international hockey teams.
