FAISALABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) had a dangerous face off on Monday when workers of both the parties came face-to-face at Ghanta Ghar Chowk of Faisalabad and started raising slogans against each other’s leaders.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s call of protest and shutdown in Faisalabad on Monday has gripped the city in serious tension, prompting the administration to deploy extra police contingents in different parts. Faisalabad is known to be the citadel of PML-N as it has maximum number of MNAs and MPAs from the city. The Party would like to prove that it is still the popularity base of the party and the leadership of the city have taken the traders and other associations into confidence.
Traders of Faisalabad have strongly condemned the shut down call and made it clear that they keep their businesses open come what may. Political observers say that both the parties are determined to show their street power in the city and only Monday will show who has the upper hand.
PTI had announced to hold protest at Ghanta Ghar Chowk of the city besides taking out a rally, despite two-day ban on pillion-riding on motorbike and imposition of Section-144. According to details, the PTI workers displayed banners at Ghanta Ghar and then the PML-N workers also started pasting their own banners. As the PML-N workers were in majority, they forced the PTI supporters to retreat from Ghanta Ghar by throwing rotten eggs and Tomatoes on them with slogans inscribed with “ Ro Imran Ro”. Enraged, PTI workers took to the Ghanta Ghar Chowk and started raising ‘Go Nawaz Go’ slogans. Responding to this, PML-N workers started to raise ‘Ro Imran Ro’ (Cry Imran Cry) slogans.
The legal fraternity of the city will boycott courts against “corruption”, “inflation” and “lawlessness” on Monday. On the other hand, Dr.Tahir-ul-Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) , the PML(Q) and Sunni Ittehad Council have announced their support for the PTI’s plan to observe the shut down strike. PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry said that nobody will be allowed to force anything upon the citizens of Faisalabad. “We’ll force them to run”, he said. PTI spokesperson Shireen Mazari said that government’s ‘Gullus’ are harassing us. “We won’t back out”, she said.
