PESHAWAR: Director General ISPR, Maj. Gen. Saleem Bajwa has said that 132 school children and nine staff members have been martyred and 121 injured as the army commandos rescued 960 school children after the armed militants stormed the Army Public School at Warsak Road here Tuesday.
Briefing the media men here tonight after the culmination of cleanup operation in school, DG ISPR said that seven terrorists wearing suicide jackets had barged into the school from the rear side and immediately occupied the auditorium of the school. The bombers started brutal firing at the students in the auditorium where a function was underway killing most of the students on the spot.
He informed that the Quick Response Force immediately reached the school and repulsed the fleeing terrorists to auditorium building. He said that seven jawans of the special services group and two officers sustained critical wounds.
All the seven terrorists have been eliminated in the shootout he said adding school has been handed over to school administration after the combing operation. He said that identify of the terrorists was being ascertained as he said there were reports that some of them speaking Arabic.
The DG ISPR made it clear that terrorists had entered the school with the sole motto of killing the students as they have no attention to make hostage the students. Had they any suck plan they would have certainly made certain demands which they did not, DG ISPR explained.
He further explained that militants selected school after conducting proper reconnaissance and compiling necessary information. He said that militants were wearing suicide jackets and were armed with heavy weaponry, come with proper planning and they have also taking ration with them.
DG ISPR said that we know the true origin of militants and the elements whose were operating them. He said that we would conduct authorities of neighboring country to avoid such type of incidents in future. He said that action would be taken against all the abettors, facilitators and supporters of the militants till their final extermination.
During the course of press briefing General Saleem Bajwa informed that dead body of the Principal, Tahira Qazi has been recovered. She was made hostage by the militants in the dying moments of operation.
At the outset of his briefing the DG ISPR said that today is darkest day in the history of the country and the grief cannot be explained in a phrase. They were inhuman, barbaric who have nothing to do with cast, creed or religion. They were the enemies of the nation and motherland.
On the behalf of Chief of Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif and Army, DG ISPR expressed profound grief with the bereaved families in this national tragedy and said that Pakistan Army was with them in this need of hour.
