One was killed and eight Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) workers were injured on Sunday allegedly by the gunmen of a former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA.
The PTI workers were on their way to a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) rally here when they come under an attack, police said. The dead was identified as 21-year-old Adnan. The injured were rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, Jhelum.
Aqeel Ahmed, a technician at the emergency ward, said that one person, who sustained a bullet injury in chest, is in a critical condition; and he has been shifted to another hospital as the DHQ Jhelum does not have the required trauma facilities.
The incident took place in Gharmala, about 5km away from Syed Zameer Jaffery Stadium Jhelum – the venue of PTI’s rally.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has sought a report from the District Police Officer (DPO) of Jhelum. A large number of PTI activists gathered outside the hospital.
Nadeem Afzal Bhatti, a local PTI leader, alleged that the rally was fired upon by the guards of Chaudhry Nadeem Khadim, a former PML-N MPA.
Chaudhry Nadeem Khadim strongly denied the PTI charge. According to him his gunmen opened fire in defence after 50 to 60 armed PTI supporters fired at his residence some seven kilometers from the PTI meeting venue.
